The Mississippi REALTOR® Hurricane Relief Fund was established in August 2005 in the hours before Hurricane Katrina struck a devastating blow to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was designed to provide swift assistance to Mississippi families who sustained significant damage to their primary residences as a result of the unprecedented natural disaster. Thanks to generous contributions from the National Association of REALTORS®, state and local REALTOR® organizations around the country and REALTORS® in Mississippi, the fund helped more than 3,000 families with more than $3 million. A maximum of $2,500 was given per family based on the level of damage to the property. All applications were reviewed anonymously an in the order in which they were received. The fund has also provided financial assistance to the Lutheran-Episcopal Disaster Response Group for building supplies and to assist owners of residential rental properties.
